Non-resident Aliens/ Resident Non-aliens

The 'Non-resident Alien' is a US tax form title for individuals lacking permanent residency or citizenship. As per the IRS, "An alien is any individual who is not a U.S. citizen or U.S. national. A nonresident alien hasn't passed the green card or substantial presence test," which included me upon arriving in the US as an international student. This project, under "Language is not Innocent," explores uncertainty and ambiguity in language and its dramatic sociopolitical impact through semiotics. It's intriguing that scrambling 'Non-resident alien' yields 'Resident non-alien,' with almost opposite meaning. Similarly, in Farsi, an Indo-European language like English, this phenomenon could occur. Two posters depict 'Non-resident alien' and 'Resident non-alien' iterations in English and Farsi.

Center for Design Discourse (C4DD) //

The Center for Design Discourse (C4DD) is an in-development research hub in the vibrant downtown area of Chicago Loop. C4DD incubates research projects, hosts public lectures and symposia, and publishes works in diverse domains within Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Game Design, UXD, and others. The C4DD aims to establish a design discourse encompassing four primary domains: research, discourse, production, and publication (The number "4" in the title represents these four avenues) to generate a positive social impact by promoting innovative design practices and addressing societal needs.

Awards: GDUSA 2023, Branding.

Designing a brand identity for the progressive center, with a focus on the future of design, has proven to be the most challenging aspect of the project. Throughout my career, I have been captivated by the concept of a fluid identity and flexible design that can adapt and transform to suit various scenarios and applications. To achieve this desired fluid quality for the C4DD identity design, I drew inspiration from Squired Kufic (banna'i), a script developed in Persian architecture during the 12th century. This script employs a highly modular and simplified style, utilizing bricks elements similar to pixels. After thorough testing across various media, the outcome of the identity design demonstrates remarkable flexibility and modularity, even in time-based mediums such as animated skin for smartwatches, while maintaining its intrinsic structural values.

School of Design/DPU
/transitional design and rebranding proposal

The new brand identity will be visually compelling, culturally relevant, and digitally engaging, catering to Gen Z students' aspirations and creative sensibilities. The creation of the new identity aimed to combine boldness with the vulnerability inherent in college students. Additionally, Arabic diacritical symbols were integrated to introduce a cross-cultural element.

IT HURTS // Behavioral campaign proposal for Chicago public transportation.
The CTA train system is crucial to Chicago's urban life, serving the city and 35 suburbs while making up 81% of public transit trips. However, it grapples with challenges like violence and social insensitivity. To address this, "It Hurts" is a design solution that improves communication, resolves conflicts, and enhances inclusivity, safety, and the overall rider experience. This behavioral campaign acknowledges the disparity between the ideal vision and the current reality of public transportation in Chicago. Its goal is to tackle social issues during train rides without relying solely on law enforcement.
