After my partner’s surgery, the hospital offered her a spoon—neither plastic nor refined, but a flimsy steel utensil adorned with a poor imitation of Victorian ornament. Holding it for the first time, fresh from the dishwasher, I found myself caught in quiet contemplation: Should I discard it, contributing to the ever-growing weight of waste? Should I integrate it into the uniform set, disrupting their harmony? Perhaps it belongs in a separate compartment, marked by its very otherness. What becomes of a miscellaneous object so curiously resistant to belonging?
